Katie Goes Platinum: All About Gray Hair!

⭐️ THESE are the Most Popular Purple Shampoos in the Silver Revolution

Hello Reader,

One of the first things I heard about when I joined my first Facebook gray hair support group was purple shampoo.

There was so much chit-chat about it, and a lot of confusion about when was the right time TO use it or IF you needed to use it.

Some people hate it because it can dry out your hair, tint your hair purple, or trigger dye-related allergies.

Other people love it because - if used properly - it can reduce the appearance of yellow tones in gray hair and brighten up the silvers.

You can read more about how and why to use purple shampoo in this article.

The biggest takeaways?

  • Nobody NEEDS to use purple shampoo. You only use it if you feel like you want to brighten up your silvers or reduce yellow tones. If you are happy with the way your gray hair looks, skip it!

It's not a necessary part of every woman's gray hair care routine. It's completely optional.
  • If you want to keep your hair from drying out, always follow up your purple shampoo with a deep conditioner. Some purple shampoos come with a companion conditioner and oftentimes those work as well as a deep conditioner.

Not all purple shampoos are equal. So you really have to experiment to find what works for you.

Recently, I polled the Silver Revolution Facebook group to find out which purple shampoos they preferred and I generated a list of the all-time favorites.

I've been working on a blog post about it but honestly I'm waaaay behind as I want to test each one out before writing about it and that will take me months as I have to photograph the product and the results.

So, in the meantime, here's a simple list of the Top 10 Most Popular Purple Shampoos (rated by the women of the Silver Revolution Facebook Group) with a few notes by me when appropriate.

In order of popularity:

  1. Fanola No Yellow - contains sulfates, which I try to avoid. Had a VERY strong scent. Made my scalp itch a bit, which was dismaying - but that effect wore off quickly. Final results: my hair looked super shiny and silvery.
  2. Bold Uniq Purple Shampoo - my personal favorite. Made in the USA. Contains none of the ingredients that I try to avoid (sulfates, parabens, phthalates). My hair looks especially silvery with this one. This shampoo is 50% stronger than their purple mask - it packs a real punch! I always follow it up with their companion conditioner and my hair feels quite soft afterwards.
  3. Matrix Total Results So Silver - haven't tested yet
  4. Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo - love it! It sudsed up a lot, which was odd, but I got great results and my hair did not feel dry afterward (recommend that you use their companion conditioner as it's excellent). I accidentally used it twice in one week with no ill effects. You can see my YouTube short for more info.
  5. Kerotin Purple Shampoo - excellent results (super shiny hair) and Kerotin is a great company that supports women. I did a full YouTube review here.

Using their companion conditioner is a MUST as my hair felt dry and brittle without it. I can use some purple shampoos once a week, but this one is more like once every two or three weeks as it can turn my silver hair a dark gunmetal gray if I use it too often.
  6. BTWCo. Purple Shampoo - super gentle, cruelty-free,made in Canada, great results, and the founder is a fellow silver haired blogger! You can read my full review here.
  7. Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Shampoo for Gray Hair - this shampoo is often listed as the most popular drugstore purple shampoo. It did brighten my hair a bit, but I was very unhappy with my hair texture even after using a deep conditioner. My hair felt dry, tangled easily, and I had a lot of flyaways. But some people swear by it so it might work well for certain hair textures.
  8. Joico Color Balance Purple Shampoo - haven't tested yet
  9. Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Wash - haven't tested yet
  10. Aveda Blue Malva - haven't tested yet

If you're in the market for purple shampoo, I hope this list and my mini-reviews helped you a little bit.

I hope to get the full blog post up soon - it will include more shampoos, including shampoo bars, which I'm eager to try.

One important note:

Please remember that purple shampoo is best for blonde and gray hair.

If you have fading brunette hair that is taking on brassy orange tones, you need blue shampoo.

Have a great week and let me know if you have any questions!

Hello Reader, A few years ago, a friend of mine had a weird incident at her workplace. My friend (let's call her "Fiona") was a producer on a very popular national talk show. Fiona worked completely behind the scenes - she was NEVER on camera.Which is what made what happened next so bizarre! Fiona's natural hair texture is very curly, but she wears it straight most of the time. One day, she decided to wear her hair curly (for once) and she drove to work. Shortly after arriving at her...
