Katie Goes Platinum: All About Gray Hair!

👩‍🦳 Is This the Best Side-Effect of Going Gray?

Hello Reader,

I hope you're well and able to keep calm during the holiday season whirlwind.

** Warning: This email is a bit long but there's a super important section at the bottom, so please make sure to check that out **

I have to be honest: I started off the holiday season feeling a wee bit of dread and dismay (mainly due to feeling overwhelmed due to my overly hectic schedule).

As the Mom in our house, I take it upon myself every year to decorate the house, bake ALL the cookies, host fabulous Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners (with all the china and silver), make sure to pick out the perfect gifts for everyone, and make sure that everyone feels included and nobody gets left out.

This year, instead of feeling happy and excited to do this (because I genuinely DO like doing it), I felt nothing but dread. It was odd and not like me.

And then - just like I did when I was still dyeing my hair but dreading it - I started thinking about WHY I was committing to doing something when my heart wasn't in it, or when I didn't want to do it.

Who was pushing me? Only me!

My husband and sons were OK with doing a low-key Christmas. I was the only one fretting about it.

Just like with my gray-hair journey, I started thinking about how I could make this work so I'd feel comfortable and not have to rush back to my old ways.

I started thinking about why I felt like I HAD to do something, when nobody was telling me to do it - it was all in my own head.

Just like with gray hair, advertising and popular culture have a lot to do with why I was pressuring myself.

So this year, we are having a different kind of Christmas.

There are fewer decorations, a LOT less baking, and instead of china and fancy tablecloths we're inviting friends for a potluck open house on Christmas Day, complete with fire pit, marshmallows, hot chocolate, and paper plates!

Will I go back to my old type of Christmas again?

I'm sure I will (unlike dyeing, which I have no desire to go back to). But maybe not every year.

The reason I'm telling you all this is because questioning WHY I'm doing something even when it makes me unhappy is one of the BEST lessons I learned from going gray

Has this happened to you, too? I'd love to hear your takeaways!

** A SILVER SISTER IN NEED **

Speaking of the holidays, I have a favor to ask.

One of our fellow silver sisters - Debbie Russo - loves Christmas cards.

Her son used to send her beautiful Christmas cards every year to make her happy. Tragically, her son passed away at age 26.

Debbie would love to receive Christmas cards from all around the world. She gave me permission to share her address with you.

If you can, could you please send Debbie a Christmas card?

Here is her address:

Debbie Russo
P.O. Box 364
Odenville, AL 35120 USA

She knows they might not make it to her in time for Christmas, but that doesn't matter - she loves getting them and says she will treasure them forever.

Thank you and have a wonderful week!

Katie xo

Hello Reader, A few years ago, a friend of mine had a weird incident at her workplace. My friend (let's call her "Fiona") was a producer on a very popular national talk show. Fiona worked completely behind the scenes - she was NEVER on camera.Which is what made what happened next so bizarre! Fiona's natural hair texture is very curly, but she wears it straight most of the time. One day, she decided to wear her hair curly (for once) and she drove to work. Shortly after arriving at her...

Hello Reader, I don't have many regrets about my gray hair transition - I loved it, and found it empowering, and came out of it with healthier hair! I'd love to hear them as it could help women in the future avoid making the same mistakes we made. Have a great day!Katie xo
